SP3 Blocks 2A/B- Final Assessment for Quarter 1

This assessment will be done in class, in writing, and without notes. Block 2A will do it on Tuesday, October 29 and block 2B will do it on Wednesday, October 30.

You will be presented a series of images, which depict someone preparing some type of food. You will write one to three sentences describing what happened in each image. To do so you will have to use preterite and imperfect together in at least one sentence per image.

This rubric will be used to score your sentences.

SP3 Three Small Writing Assessments

You'll write 3 awesome paragraphs. Each will count as a separate "Small Assessment." This rubric will be used to score each. I will provide you feedback twice on each of your paragraphs, so you will have multiple opportunities to edit and revise your work.  So for the Accuracy strand of the rubric, you should do well. For the Content strand, you must respond to the prompt and have a minimum of 8 sentences in each paragraph. For the Effort strand you need to focus on developing complex and compound sentences, and of course you are encouraged to write more than 8 sentences. These are the prompts.
  1. Write a paragraph about what is happening in the picture I gave you (present tense).
  2. Write a paragraph about what you and your family are going to do over the Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks (use the lazy future or the formal future tense).
  3. Write a paragraph about what you did over the summer using both the preterite and imperfect together.

Spanish 3 Major Oral Assessment on Art

Over the course of the next week and a half, we will continue our study of art, Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. However, Sr. Jannke will not speak English during class time. Each day we will see clips from the movie Frida, review relevant vocabulary, discuss samples of art from both artists and discuss the artists themselves.

So, the next 4 classes will be in 100% Spanish. I will use basic vocabulary to help you comprehend: vocab that I have already (or will) introduced. Over the course of these 4 days it is imperative that you participate fully in the following ways.

  • Listen closely to all the Spanish spoken
  • Try to speak as much Spanish as you can; especially ask questions
  • Take notes! (in English and/or Spanish)
Why do you need to do all of this? Well, next week, you'll have to prop yourself up in front of a microphone and record your response to the following prompt. You will do this on your own in the hall, not in front of me or the class.

Prompt: Choose to discuss either Diego or Frida. Describe the artist and/or his/her work. You may include biographical information, factual descriptive information about his/her work, opinions of the artist and/or work, etc. Essentially, you can tell me anything you want about the artist and/or his/her work. Your mini-oral presentation must last between 3 and 5 minutes. You may never use English during your presentation.

Recording Dates:
  • Block 3 - June 13, Thursday
  • Block 6 - June 14, Friday
You will be scored using our departmental presentational rubric (on the reverse side of the printed version of this page).

Important note: YOU CAN DO IT!!! There are students of all abilities in our class. Don't compare yourself to others. Don't be afraid, it's ok to make mistakes. If you feel overwhelmed, keep your mini-presentation super basic; you could even use Spanish I grammar (along with the new vocab, of course) to do this well. Take a deep breath.

Everyone needs to try very hard to be engaged in all three classes this week. Over the weekend you can begin to prepare using your notes. On Monday, June 10, I will help you prepare further though one-on-one support.

Assembly Wednesday May 22

During AIM 60 on Wednesday there will be an assembly in the auditorium for most of the school. (Several advisories are participating in a survey instead.)

LHS class of 1987 alumna Beth Brundage Murphy and her work will be the focus. Beth is a very successful documentary filmmaker and she will show us clips from her latest project, What Tomorrow Brings.

What Tomorrow Brings is about the extremely complicated issue of educating girls in Afghanistan. Beth returned from filming earlier this month and LHS will be the first to see her footage.

Optional HW for SP3

Create two sentences from this recipe.

1) First, write an independent clause using the future tense. So in other words something like this....
Yo voy a mirar la televisión 
2) Then pick one of our new conjunctions related to time (cuando, en cuando, tan pronto como, hasta que, después de que). In this case I'll pick....
hasta que
3) Finally, finish out the sentence with a dependent clause using the subjective. Remember what happens in the future, may or may not actually happen! In this case I'll say....
mi madre venga a casa

So the whole sentence is formed by combining the 3 parts...
Yo voy a mirar la televisión....plus....hasta que.....plus.....mi madre venga a casa.

So the final sentence is...
Yo voy a mirar la televisión hasta que mi madre venga a casa.

Try two of your own. Remember start with the FUTURE tense and finish with the SUBJUNCTIVE.

Continue giving your opinions as we started in class. Use creo que and no creo que. Login to eSudio and go to the eBook (not the Workbook), then go to chapter 4 and then to grammar. The activity we were doing is Activity 1. Give it a shot, if you need more practice. I can give you feedback based on what you submit. You could also find the activity in the book on the second page of the grammar section of chapter 4.
